how to ding repair

All dings where not created equal, but repairing them is usually requires the same steps. First sand the repair area down with a heavy grit sand paper. Second cut out as much fiber glass as needed to cover and over lap shallow dings and lamenate the glass on to the ding. The deep dings may be better filled with a filler such as micro ballons. Once the resin has kicked, brush a mixture of resin, surfacing agent, and cytalyst over the repaired area. After the mixture of resin and surfacing agent (commonly known as hot coat) has kicked sand down your board with a block and sand paper (usually 120 grit to start with and finist with 220 or 320 grit paper). At this point the surfboard is ready to surf, but if you feel the board needs to look better, resand the area moderatly with 120 grit paper and re-hotcoat the area, then resand starting with 220 grit sand paper and finish with as high a grit of paper as you like.
Feel free to change the process as you like, and remember there is no one way to work on surfboards, but there is certainly a wrong way
That is it with ding repairs, snapped boards, broken fins, and gloss and polish boards require a bit more work, as well as a few specialty tools.

  1. Always remember to glass over the the micro ballons (after hardening and sanding). Micro ballons do not add strength, only lightness. Also, do not fill your dings temporarily with wax. Wax and resin go together like oil and water. Wax will need to be removed, which means so will the valuable foam it is attached to. And wax surrounding the ding needs to be removed as well. The more serious the ding, the more wax that needs to be removed.
