In the world of surfboard making, more and more surfboard shapers are moving to cnc machined surfboards, while less are sticking to the true hand shape method. In fact some shapers have not really shaped any surfboards by hand at all. What do you prefer, or do you care at all? And how do you think it matters when it comes to the surfing part?
I would prefer a machine if it could drink a 12ver while shaping. Since they are yet to develop a machine that can party, I prefer a human (It would be cool to find a chick that can shape in a Hooter's like outfit, thus the human nomenclature.)
ReplyDeleteMachines are a great tool, they can help people produce fantastic surfboards... But I have hand shaped a lot of surfboards, and I do not always appreciate seeing someone that can not shape by hand, but with a computer, may finish a board just as well. It is like a photographer taking a picture of art, and then making his photograph/work equal to the painters.
ReplyDeleteIt just is not the same, even if it looks the same, there is something to be said for hard word and putting in your time, basically paying your dues.
Once someone has developed a skill to hand shape surfboards, I do not care how that shaper decides to complete boards from that point forward.
