Degr33 surfboards . com surfboard web site
These guys seem to have a large site, seems pretty cool, does anyone know anything about them, I would love to hear.
Equinox surfboards . com . Is this a new company
I have checked this site out because of its seemingly lox price surfboards. As a surfboard shaper, glasser, sander, hot coater, fin setter and everything else that can be done on surfboards... I have done for 15 years full time... I wonder why the price is so low.
I am not going to draw any conclusions until I have been well informed. Maybe these people just want everyone work super hard so everyone can surf for as little as possible, I just dont know.

This site seems to be productive, has anyone bought any surfboards, or product from this site?
Dogfunk.com Dog funk . com, this is a cool site and they have a shop in Utah
Has anyone checked it out?
Coral Care Tips,
I will put a few updates here on how to care for your corals. I would also encourage others to share their expertise. Acropora to start with needs pretty clean water, but more importantly may be water stability, without this these slower to adapt creatures may be stressed too much and will die.

Surfline is it great? Or has it changed surfing since the 90's and earlier?
I remember getting up early and driving down to the dougnut shop, I would pull the LA Times or a Daily Breeze off of the rack and head straight toward the weather forecast( I think it was on b-3). Back then, that was all we had to see what future waves were coming, Surfline was the paper, and dont even think we were informed on what degree they were coming from. That was way to advanced back then, what we got was more like a 24 hour guessing game. So that was it, and surfers were off to find their own surf, their own way. I remember how great it felt when we laid our eyes on wonderful surf. Now it still is great to find good surf, but now, you kind of know what your getting before you get there. It just does not feel the same to me, but that is today and that is my opinion.
Surfline is great, but sometimes so is suprise.

Andy Hori, Hori boards, surfboards. This guy shapes some really inovative surfboards.
I have seen this guys boards at glass shops as well as in the water, he is a good shaper that is very inovative. Definently worth checking out.
JL Surfboards, Jean-Luc Roberts, Former NSSA champion
This is a good shaper from the Southbay Redondo Beach area. He has been shaping for atleast 12 years, and as a laminator and a shaper, I can say these are nice surfboards. The lines are clean, the design is sweet, and the finish shaping is very fine, the whole surfboard is professional. I would be very comfortable ordering a surfboard from John-Luc, especially if I were a large person. Jean-Luc is not a small person, if I were to guess I would say he is 6'4" 235 lbs. This helps him build boards for any adult person.

John Wegener Surfboards, LongBoards, alaias surfboard, Tom Wegener's brother
This is a shaper, he could be one of the best shapers I have ever met. No matter what board is on the racks to be glassed, John Wegeners are always the cleanest. Also his boards surf great, this is due to his patience and understanding.
Russo Surfboards, North Western Pacific Shaper,
I like to brose surfboards, because its nice to see crafstmen making nice products like Russo. Good Job

Peter Navarro, this guy is the man. This guy is the hero of the Democrates, and sets the bar for economics, a total independent thinker.
Every time I hear that he is speaking I set the date. I would never willingly miss one of his speeches. Peter Navarro, a professor of economics at UC Irvine, also he is a well respected stock out look. This guy is a real thinker, he does not tow the party lines, he is a true economist, someone democrates and republicans should trust and respect. I plan on ordering his books one at a time, and I would love to attend his class at UC Irvine.

Lightning strikes the glassing shop, Wilmington Ca. Tuesday, October 19th
Today started as a nice slow day, I went to Palos Verdes High School to help out with their surfboard shaping class. I left at about noon to go home, eat some food, and say hi to my kid. After this I left to go wrap up some surfboards, I needed to router some fin boxes and install some fins. I could hear the rain on the tin roof, it sounded like a waterfall, peltinging my roof with a crackling thunder in the background, I worked away routering finbox after finbox. As I got to my last board, I finished it with ease, looking forward to going home, I rushed to the counter and set down the router... Not a full second later, an explosion!!! It sounded like a bomb went off above my head, no crackle, no echoe just an odd deafening clanging popping explosion. I went outside, after going to the bathroom, to see if anyone saw what had just happened, everyone hit the deck, no visual, but we all know what happened. I will probably be going to church this week. Thanks

Palos Verdes HighSchool Surfboard Shaping Class, PV High, shape a board
Hey as we go, just ask questions and I will answer them, and remember there really are things such as stupid questions, but I will answer them anyways.
Shaping Surfboards, shortboard, longboard, fish board, fun board, how to shape rails, template, foil, concaves, vee, fin placement, decks, finish sand
The first thing you need when shaping is a template. Either a quarter, half, or whole template is what you need. Start with the blank surfboard, and an electric planer, start planing the bottom and skinning the deck. You are going to do the rough work right now, just get your board to the approximate thickness righ now. I like to thin out the nose and tail a lot before I go to the next step. Next you will draw the plan template on the surfboard, cut it out with a saw and smooth it over with a block and sand paper. Then I put in the bottom contours, and map out the rails and speed edge. Rails are tricky, I use 3 measurements on the deck, and 2 for the bottom undertuck. Make sure you leave a speed edge, blend your lines, screen it with sanding screen, and fine sand your board. Do not leave a high stringer, as a laminator, sander, polisher etc. I will probably not fix this for you, nor will anyone else.
If your wondering why I am writing this, its because I think everyone should shape atleast one surfboard in thier life as a surfer. Further more, I help teach a surfboard shaping class, and I think this blog may help them when they have questions. Their will be more later on this blog, and in the PV High surfboard shaping topic on this blog site

Hydor Koralia evolution vs. Maxi Jet power heads run on a red sea wave timer
I have had a red sea wave timer for years now, it has powered 4 maxi jet 1200's for about 2 years now. Maxi jets 1200's move about 300 gallons per hour and last forever. But with the fire power of the new Hydor Koralias offer, which is up too and above 1400 gallons per hour, I have been enticed to give them a try. So on Oct. 10th 2010, I purchased a Hydor Koralia evolution that pushes 750 gph, it is running off of my red sea wave timer. So far, I have to say I'm pretty impressed. My first impression of the unit in the tank was pleasing, it is only a little larger than the small maxi jets, but it comes with a magnet mount, which blows away the stock suction cups of most brands. I hope the Hydor can last the test of time, I will up date weekely and then monthly of its performance, and its start up noise. Until now, only maxi jets have withstood the on off cycles desired by reefers. How will Hydor do? lets see!

Rock climbing and boldering
This is one sweet sport, talk about a matter of life and death this sport is you agianst mother nature and gravity. But if you want to give it a try there are a few musts. Musts number one is get over your fear of hights, musts number two is get a grip, really you want to be able to hold on to more than a tv controller or a computer mouse. If you really like climbing try joining a rock climbing gym. I joined Hanger 18, its a fun gym, with a lot to climb, I go a few times a week to meet up with some freinds, and we climb away.
How strong should a surfboard be?
This is a hard question to answer, but to weight it out, you must marginalize the benefits, and who said micro economics wasn't practical... If a surfboard can withstand an impact of 50 lbs per sq foot and it is hit with 51 lbs per sq foot it will ding. But if a surfboard can withstand an impact of 55 lbs per sq foot and is nailed with a 51 lb blow, it may not even dent. In the world of surfboards, each addition costs, and weights more, you will have to marginalize the benefits of more cost, possibly more weight, for less dings. How much performance are you willing to sacrifice for a stronger surfboard?

First time shaping a surfboard, how did it go?
Everyone that has shaped a surfboard, had to shape a first. These usually aren't pretty, and mine was worse. I actually had the privilage of shaping the worst board in history. I first had to use my dad's tools in 1998 and his garage, I decided to make a surfboard on my parents coffee table in the middle of their garage. The only thing my dad said was, do not make a mess and do not screw up his tools. So there I was in the garage, with a coffee table, block plane, sand paper, hand saw, and my dads prized hitachi electric planer. What could go wrong, well I broke the nose of the surfboard, ran over the cord to the electric planer, covered the garage with a flamable foam dust, and oh yea I caught the surfboard and foam on fire. To make things better, I airbrushed the surfboard green, in the drive way, by all of my family's cars. So that was my first surfboard, I will post a picture of it some time.
Have you ever been stung by a stingray? What to do...
These things hurt bad if they inject you with venom. If you can, pee on it, this counter acts the venom. Then rest the wound in warm water, take an advil, and make sure you get the barb out. The venom will hurt four about four hours, hour two and three being the worst. Good luck and shuffle your feet next time. Also some people may need to go to the doctors.
The only time I was stung by a ray was at torrance beach. I tried to surf it off, but about 2 hours later I had to go home. These things really hurt.

How to build your own surfboard shaping room
Every shaping room has its own positives, but some are simply better than others. My best room is twenty feet long, with a twelve foot ceiling, and is ten feet wide. It is a dark blue to cast shadows over the surfboard, the blue paint does this by absorbing the light. The lights are side mounted ten feet apart, the floor is a nice soft cushion, and the ceiling has a good power vent fan. The side lights are mounted 39"s above the soft floor, and the shaping racks are 38"s tall. Above my lights are a 10" shelve, these direct the light only at the surfboard, while serving as a nice tool rack above. You will also need plenty of compressed air, a few electrical outlets and a real loud stereo system. Do not let any external light in.
If you do not have much space to work with, don't freak. I have worked out of rooms as small as 8' x 8 x 10'. The ability lies in the shaper to make a surfboard, the room is merely an extra tool.
Anyone have some Ideas?

Does the surfer matter in the shaper?
Not really, I know plenty of good shapers that are terrible surfers, I also know a few good shapers that don't even surf. The part of surfing that helps the shaper is, the ability to surf and test their own product. What do you think about this?

how to fix a surfboard ding fast
If your in a pinch, and your ding is less than an inch, get our the uv cure, and the repair is a cinch.
uv is the best, particularly if it is in powder form which requires mixing.
good luck

Why use acetone
Acetone breaks down resin, if you wash your tools with clean acetone, you can re-use your tools for a long time. Remember to properly dispose your dirty acetone, probably before it dries up.
The Milwuakee 5540, the best sanding machine ever!
These sanders last for ever, and they are equipped with a variable speed, so you can sand, polish, and even shape with a milwuakee sander. Plus they are 100 percent repairable. When it comes to surfboards, these are my first line of attack when it comes to sanding.
Is surfing worth it in Mexico
We all know the rumors of great surf in Mexico, but is it worth all the hassle and possible risks?
Why do you surf
Many people love surfing, but everyone has their own personal reasons. What are your reason for surfing?
What do you pay most for?
When buying a board like Channel Islands, or Lost, the price that these surfboards sell for is substantial. What do you feel you are being charged for mostly with these surfboards; quality of materials for durability, or are you paying mostly for marketing which includes their team rider salaries and equipment?
What's your favorite type of surfboard?
There are lots of different types of surfboards, there are long boards, short boards, fun boards, fish boards, S.U.P. boards etc. What is your favorite type of surfboard and why?
Future fin install and repairs
Fin installs are tricky, they require specialized tools to do the job correctly. Fist you need a router guide, you can get these directly from future fins, second you need a router that works with their system, and finally you need a fin box. Once these tools are ready to go, you simply just router you problem away and install your new box. I would suggest putting tape over the opening of the box, so that you do not fill it with resin. The rest is really up to your discernment, well have fun, if anyone has a tip feel free to elaborate.

Making surfboards, man vs machine
In the world of surfboard making, more and more surfboard shapers are moving to cnc machined surfboards, while less are sticking to the true hand shape method. In fact some shapers have not really shaped any surfboards by hand at all. What do you prefer, or do you care at all? And how do you think it matters when it comes to the surfing part?

Winter, time for wetsuits
Now that winter is soon to be here, it is time to get your new wetsuits. I know that there are many good brands out there, but I really stick to hotline wetsuits, and sometimes I will get an oneil wetsuit. Mostly I surf in a 5/4 wetsuit with a hood, the hood is mainly for protecting my ears, and I also find that the 5/4 is plenty flexible and very warm.
If anyone has a great experience with a particular wetsuit please make mention of it.

surfboards vs the enviroment
Surfboards are not the most enviromentaly friendly products in the world, but they are a very small part of the worlds staggering waste. While we can definently get more life out of our surfboards, we can also gain perspective from this unusual product and sport. People through surfing, learn to appreciate the ocean and the worlds resources, because surfing is more than a sport, it is a way of life, and it breeds a unique experience of nature. So next time you are standing on the sand, which is a huge biological filter for the worlds oceans and is also a mighty ph stabilizer, remember that man made products can also benifiet the enviroment. Surfers bring inovation, respect, and appreciation to the sport of surfing, to the beauty of marine life, and a wonder to the immencely diverse biology.

how to ding repair
All dings where not created equal, but repairing them is usually requires the same steps. First sand the repair area down with a heavy grit sand paper. Second cut out as much fiber glass as needed to cover and over lap shallow dings and lamenate the glass on to the ding. The deep dings may be better filled with a filler such as micro ballons. Once the resin has kicked, brush a mixture of resin, surfacing agent, and cytalyst over the repaired area. After the mixture of resin and surfacing agent (commonly known as hot coat) has kicked sand down your board with a block and sand paper (usually 120 grit to start with and finist with 220 or 320 grit paper). At this point the surfboard is ready to surf, but if you feel the board needs to look better, resand the area moderatly with 120 grit paper and re-hotcoat the area, then resand starting with 220 grit sand paper and finish with as high a grit of paper as you like.
Feel free to change the process as you like, and remember there is no one way to work on surfboards, but there is certainly a wrong way
That is it with ding repairs, snapped boards, broken fins, and gloss and polish boards require a bit more work, as well as a few specialty tools.

ding repair essentials
In the world of surfing, ding repairs are a must in order to keep your surfboard from breaking down under your very own feet. The materials needed are surfboard lamenating resin, and catylste. In addition you will need, fiber glass, sand paper, paper cups, styrene, surfacing agent, and stiring sticks.
If you want to really get into ding repair, you will also want a milwuakee 5540 sander polisher, a soft and hard pad from power pad or flex pad, a natural wooden brush, and acetone to clean your tools of mixed resin.
for questions just blog or text 310 503 0281
